Pray before each reading of the scripture. Ask God to help you understand what is written. Open your mind for the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what you read. :o) Each time you go back to a passage you read before, pray again for more enlightenment to what is there. Its the LIVING Bible... therefore each time you read the Bible, you will be given more of the Word, the original meaning is still there, but more in depth understanding comes as you read and study more.

God bless you!!

If you mean you want to understand what the author intended to communicate, then it's essential to understand some basic introductory information: who wrote it, who were they writing to, what were they addressing if it's a letter, the time period being addressed and the setting of the events. We've had 2000 years of biblical scholarship to figure all this out, so a good commentary like Word Biblical Commentary (and many others) can fill you in on all these details. Commentaries are especially helpful in studying prophecy as they can fill you in on the well-understood uses of certain symbols and literary styles, especially apocalyptic literature which has been so distorted by ignorant backwoods preachers making up their own interpretations. Having a thorough grounding in the details behind the text will help you understand what the writer intended for you to understand. If you believe God moved the writer to write what was written, then to understand the text as the author intended is to understand it as God intended. The notion that you can simply approach the text in a prayerful attitude (ignorant of its purpose) and not end up misunderstanding is the sort of supernaturalist attitude behind "devotional reading" that has given birth to a thousand heresies.

Proverbs 23:23 says "Buy truth and do not sell it. Get wisdom and instruction and understanding." The Bible is not an oracle like the kids toy "The Magic Eight-Ball" where you can just pop it open and read and God gives you a winning lotto number. Study it with the same precision you'd prepare to write a term paper for history class. You'd go to the library and consult multiple references before assuming you understood the topic well enough to write about it. Think of scripture the same way. Your goal is to understand it well enough to explain it to someone else, so you want to be sure you understand it completely and accurately.

First, pray.
There are good bible study groups out there, as well as several places for resources to help.
To get more, even try learning the Greek in order to read it in the original language. In his book, BIBLICAL PREACHING, Haddon W. Robinson illustrated the difference. It's like going from watching a black and white TV set to going to watch a colored TV set. The greek makes it so much clearer.
So word studies are a help.
I could go on, and probably write better than I have, but the ONE thing you really have to do is this:
act on what you read. Practical application in your life. It is useless to know something just to know it. Do the word, not just hear it only.

Why do you want to know? In the way the Holy Spirit is in us, He will come to our help and put in our mouth what we need to do or say. To those who God choose he gave them the grace to understand the Word of God in its fullness. "From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." John 1:16-17 I think that is up to God. Is not about what we literally know about the Bible but what the Holy Spirit teaches us through the the Word of God. "2You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit." (1 Corinthians 12:2-3) The Word of God, is God and God is love. (John 1+) So is not about learning but is a way of living, because we can learn the bible by heart but if we don't love, we are nothing.

I do it this way, I read a psalm as kind of an appetizer, then I read a chapter from old testament, as a main course of the history, then I read a chapter of new testament as my dessert. It is amazing to read this way because you really see how the whole Bible cordinates with each part. I read the message version also, It is put in everyday terms, and very reader friendly:)

Pray for wisdom before you begin reading and ask to be guided to the TRUTH.

Don't look at one verse and say oh this matches what I've been taught. You need to take the entire Bible in context... 2 Tim 3:15 says that "ALL scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight ......."

I commend you for the question and wish you the best in your efforts.

Whenever you read the Word of God prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding. The Holy Spirit in us is our Teacher and He is the Author of the Bible. It is important to see the revelation of our Lord Jesus in the Word and the Holy Spirit delights to show Jesus to us in the Word. I pray that the entrance of the Word in your heart will bring light to you.
