Sin separates us from God's presence, period (Is. 59:2). But as far as His love toward us:

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 8 contains a story about a prostitute who is caught in the act of commiting adultery. She is dragged before Jesus while he is teaching in the synagogue. The religious leaders are ready to stone her and ask for Jesus to condemn her. So he bent down and started to draw in the sand, and then when they kept bothering him, he stood up and said "alright stone her, but let the person who hasn't sinned throw the first stone". Then he bent back down and wrote in the sand again. One by one they turned away until she was standing before Jesus alone. He asked her if there was anyone left to condemn her, and she said no. He said, "then neither do I... go and sin no more".
This is the heart of God. That at the moment when you feel the furthest away, even at the moments when you think you are as good as dead... he is there to forgive you. Note that quite often the difference between Jesus and the religious leaders is still pretty common?

I think we are all being tested by him, but God does forgive us for our mistakes.

He always loves us.
