He died a couple of years ago. We have a young horse by him. I was just wanting a little information on him.

I've never heard of a stallion called Danell but there was a stallion called Danehill who was a very good horse in the 80's. Not sure if he is still alive though.

It sounds like you might be thinking about Danehill, who stood at Coolmore Stud in Ireland until his untimely death a couple of years ago. He died in a paddock accident: because of his value (stud fees from this horse generated well over $50,000,000/year revenue for Coolmore, from sales of his services and his offspring-- he was a "dual hemisphere stallion and bred well over 150 mares per year in each hemisphere), he was not just turned out to graze, he was hand-grazed with a handler at the end of a lead shank. Evidently he had a "stallion moment" and reared up, and fell over backwards, hitting his head and sustaining a fatal injury.

Danehill was a son of Claiborne Farm stallion Danzig, and almost by himself created the dual-hemisphere stallion market. Coolmore sent him to Australia and when that was found to be profitable, they started sending other stallions. Other farms soon followed suit and now there's a regular migration of stallions to Australia, New Zealand, and South America at the end of the northern hemisphere breeding season.

Danehill's sons have proven popular at stud, and so his legacy looks to continue on for some time to come.

Danehill died in May 2003 following a paddock accident. So the rumours say he was being led out to his field for his daily turn out when he reared up, slipped over and fractured his pelvis. They had no choice but to put him down.

I won't go into more detail about his record as a sire as plenty of others already have.

If the horse you are looking for is Danehill, by Danzig by Northern Dancer, then Karin C. has answered your question very well. Go to Coolmore. com or the bloodhorse.com for more information. Yes, he died in 2003. If you have a young Thoroughbred by Danehill you have a valuable property.

Danehill is one of the most prolific sires of the past 20 years in both Europe and Australia (and popularized the shuttle stallion phenomenon). Danehill is the world's leader in siring stakes winners (over 300 so far) and graded stakes winners.
