This country was founded on the principles of allowing religious freedom, not freedom "from" religion. The separation clause was to keep the government from endorsing a single country-wide religion, such as what England had at that time. The Constitution also states that it is not allowed to infringe on the free exercise of religion. The laws of this country are based on absolute, universal and moral ethics... It agrees with the values held in the ten commandments. The belief that it is not right to murder, steal, etc.. which is why many of the courts in this land used to display the ten commandments. Many of the founding fathers agreed that the state would not exist or work correctly without the moral compass that religion affords.

They should be seperate to prevent the establishment of a 'state' religion, such as the ancient Romans had.
The 'state' religion concept can be dangerous in that the seated ruler becomes 'god'. In some of the old pagan empires, this lead to human sacrifice. Not a good thing for the populace in general.
The seperation of church and state ensures that the governing body cannot establish a 'church', which establishment would be closely followed by a law requiring attendance, titheing, etc.
Not a good thing. Government has NO business in religion.

Thomas Jefferson wrote in his letter entitled, "the wall of separation" (http://www.usconstitution.net/jeffwall.html) that the state should stay out of the church. There is nothing in any historical record that indicates that the church should stay out of the states business. This was placed in the constitution for the church's protection (see years 400-1600 AD of Christianity). We have to take into account that our founding fathers were men who had only been in a church controlled by the govt., and then take note as to why they were so adamant about the separation. When the government is church ran, the cause of Christ becomes very polluted. My take is that they should be separate... ex. never should the government ever be able to pass a law that says that you have to be a Christian, muslim, athiest, ect. But there is no ban on the people of these different belief systems, getting seats in the government and pushing the ethics they teach into legislation.

My take is that if Christianity were the religion of the state, there would be a lot more hypocrites in church and gov't than there are now. God does not want anyone to declare they are Christians if they don't really believe. Atheists and other religions would suffer discrimination because Christians would only want other Christians in gov't positions.

Absolutely. Examples in history of Zealots in power are too numerous to point them all out, but one simply has to look at the likes of the Taliban, Adolf Hitler, Napolean, and even the Romans to see why this is the case.
The government dictating religion leads to even more big brother than we are already experiencing. Think of the Crusades or the Witch Hunts. Religious politics tends to lead to scary events.

I think they should but its difficult to accomplish completely. People should be able to chose where and how they worship on their own time. School should be for teaching facts and whatnot. It becomes difficult when issues like evolution are taught because it violates some religious beliefs and things like the pledge of allegiance for the same reason. Also, religiuos debates are so controversial and they will continue to be fought over and killed over that they should be kept out of the school as much as possible.

We were never desinged that way. through out the Bible the separation was indistinct. In addition what we believe will form the basis for law in our society. In is a ruse by "the enemy" to stop morailty and God's law from being the basis for a well governed community!

yes, look at all the middle eastern countries. If it were not seperate we would have full blown civil war in our country. Plus what does freedom mean to you? Freedom to believe as you choose not what the government wants you to believe.
