nope. You can do the dual boot thing if you wish. What is the existing OS? If it is a version of Windows it will auto upgrade, although I would recommend backing up your important data and then doing a clean install.
If you have a Linux distribution then you can do a dual boot. I am not sure about being able to access the same files as you can with a dual boot of XP and Ubuntu for example. But here is a good link to get you started:

You can always have dual boot with MS operating systems. As well as Lunux. Its good practise to have it dual booted when you are migrating to new Operating system, coz u need an option if evrything went to hell.

Butfor dual booting Vista with other Microsoft's OS's, like XP/2000 u have to get few points clear, (http://lifehacker.com/software/top/windows-vista-beta-how-to-dual-boot-windows-xp-and-windows-vista-179906.php)

And if you need to dual boot Vista with Linux or other GNU's, then you'll have to install vista first and then the Linux.

Hope this helps.

You can dual boot Vista, intall it on a seperate partition. But there is a certain thing you have to do since vista doesn't use boot.ini like xp did. Look up "dual boot vista" in google..
