Jews have Jerusalem, Christians have Rome, Muslims have Mecca.

To each his own, right?

Right. Jerusalem is the holiest city to the Jewish people, but they are not allowed to pray on Mt. Moriah, the site of the First Temple and the Second Temple.

Only Muslims are permitted to pray on the Temple Mount.

Jerusalem is the third holiest place in the world to Muslims. They are permitted to pray on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

There are many churches, synagogues and mosques throughout Israel. All religions have complete freedom of worship, with the one exception mentioned above.

Bethlehem (which is not in Israel but is part of the Palestinian Authority) had been primarily a Christian city, but in recent years the "friction" with the Muslims there has resulted in many Christians leaving.

Currently, Jews are not permitted to go to Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem except in bulletproof buses, although it's just a few minutes walk from Gilo in Jerusalem.

Ah, you do have a partial point, however the Muslims of Jerusalem don't want complete control over Jerusalem, they just want the freedom they had before the partition. And it isn't just Muslims who want that freedom, it's the Palestinian Christians too. Everyone is so focused on "Jew vs Muslim" that the Christians are ignored, and they too are suffering because of the wall and Israel's attempts to take over. Jerusalem is holy for Jews, Christians and Muslims as well, so it is only fair that all three have access to the places they consider holy grounds. Mecca means nothing to Jews and Christians, the Vatican means nothing to Jews and Muslims, so of course these places aren't accommodated to the needs of the other religious groups. I agree that fairness is definitely key to the problems in Jerusalem, not bombs dropped on homes or carried onto busses.

Jerusalem holds a special place is Muslims and Christians hearts too. Wouldn't sharing with others (and not turning this land into a bloodbath) suit all better?

actually, Sunni Islam has 4 holy cities, of which Jerusalem is only the 4th in importance, but Muslims do not like to share, especially with Jews, whom they are ordered to despise.

Religious insecurity. They cannot base their religion on its own merits, but instead need to claim to surplant another spiritually and physically to feel like they're right.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it was their country before it was yanked from them.
If the Indians came and wanted their country back, we might hear a few complaints from Americans wanting their homes, schools and land back.

Because it's the place from which Muhammad ascended to Heaven, and because religious folk just like to fight over stuff that other religious folk have. I think it's part of some sacred oath or something.
