Because it is the way in which the Lord has chosen to seal the relationship of believers to Him. God is faithful to His promises, but it is important for us to realise that in order to remain in our relationship with Him we must keep our side of the bargain. We are not free to go our own way, being committed to Him. While the Old Testament covenants (starting with God's covenant with Abraham) were with the Jews, His chosen people, the New Testament (which might equally well be expressed "New Covenant") marks His relationship with those who have come to salvation in Jesus Christ through the blood of the Everlasting Covenant. We are not our own, as we have been bought with a price. At the last supper, Jesus explained to His disciples that the blood which was to be shed on the cross was the blood of the New Covenant. Just as the blood of the lamb marked upon the doors of Jewish households had saved those inside from the visit of the angel of death in Egypt, so entering into the New Covenant through the blood of Jesus wins us our salvation.

The Scripture makes much of the various Covenants between the Almighty YHVH and men. There are about 7 of them. If it happened that often and Scripture tells us so much about them it must be important for our salvation. Since only the Almighty can bring a clean thing out of an unclean thing, we need to know how to allow this to happen, for it is the basis of our hope.

Covenant is the conditional promises made to humanity by God. However His promises are based on conditions, but His love for us is unconditional.

God will never go back or break the promises He made to us. But whether we are faithful or not faithful, His promises are still there and His love is still their.
