My 4 month old D80 stopped auto focusing today after a friend "played" with it. I think he forced the focus dial pass the logical stop while the camera was trying to auto focus. Now in auto focus mode the camera goes through he motions of focusing but never beeps (to register that it's focused). Needless to say the pisture is not in focus. I can still manual focus. Is there any way to fix this myself? New lens? or can it be repaired?

AF-S lens 18-135mm. Can't find anything about a reset function in the manual.

Your friend may have just altered the focus mode from autofocus to manual or from single to continuous.

Look on the camera to the right of lens mount (on the right as you are facing the camera, but on the left as you are using it) and see if there is a switch labeled "AF/M" and flip it to "AF" for auto-focus.

You are probably accustomed to using "Single-servo auto-focus" ("AF-S"), so look for this in your manual and see how to reset it. I'd give you more specific directions, but I have a D70s and D200 and not a D80, so I can't look up the precise steps to tell you.

Get the manufacturer information out and call the Nikon help line. You will probably need to send it in for repairs. Unless you are a professional you could do more damage than good. It seems that they may have broken the lens but not the camera. If you don't want to call Nikon go to your local camera shop they can direct you to what may be wrong.
