Dude like you I am a sunni.
To sum up (from what I have read and been told) here are the differences....
we believe Muhammad (pbuh) to be the head of Islam-Shias believe Its Hazarat Ali (pbuh 2)
We have 30 chapters in the quran-they have approx 20
And then there's the beliefs around Muharram (Islamic calender month). Sunni's mourn the Prophet in peace whereas some Shias do it more by harming themselves.
BEFORE my post breaks into shias Vs sunni's please note this is what I have read and been told. Of course if you are a shia you'll know better! I didn't mean to cause offence in what I have written!
As for branches-two is an understatement! How long have you got for me to list all the branches of Islam?

I am not a Shiite but I am a Sunni, and I've been reading a lot about Shiite lately. Basically we share the same belief..
See, the main difference is that when Mohammed (PBUH) died they believed strongly that Ali or anyone from his bloodline should have been his successor although Mohammed (PBUH) told Abu Bakr to be the Imam in the next prayer ( the first prayer after the prophet's death ) therefore it was a sign to Muslims that Abu Bakr is suitable to be the Caliph..anyway that's how Shiites "originated" ... anyway if you read Arabic I recommend you to read: اÙخطÙØ· اÙعرÙضة and اÙØ®Ù

very interesting books.. and if you want something in English and clear search it on wikipedia..
O another thing, there are some Caliphs and Companions that Shiites do not declare as Companions and discard any Hadith that was narrated by them therefore they have some different "laws" than we do
salam :)

I'm not a Muslim, but my doctor is a Shiite Muslim and a true gentleman. When i asked him about the sectarian violence and the differences between the two branches, he said that the two were basically the same and that foreign powers wanted to put a riff between the two so others are the ones who make a big deal about it, while Muslims don't really see a separation. It's the old "divide and conquer" method.
Oh and Islam isn't the only religion with two branches. Most have branches; Jews have several, Christians have several dozen different branches which are VERY different from each other.
Hope that helped.

I'm not a Shi'i, but from what I've read Shi'ah Islam believes that the intended spiritual successor of the Prophet was 'Ali (Muhammad's son-in-law and cousin). He is known as the first Imam, followed by Hasan and Husayn and (depending on the sect) up to nine other Imams. Shi'is accept the same Qur'an as the Sunnis, but the system of jurisprudence is different, being based on traditions (hadith) from the Imams or from the Prophet as passed through the Imams.
As to your second question, most religions have broken into branches.
