For hydrogen to burn, oxygen is needed. So you could have a bottle of hydrogen, and make a spark totally inside the gas, and nothing would happen. But bring a spark near the open end, where it contacts oxygen in the surrounding air, and hydrogen burns quickly. If you mix two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen in a water bottle, you have the perfect mixture to make the whole container go at the same time. The explosion is deafening.
