In order to document your child's US citizenship, you must apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad of a US Citizen. Contact the nearest US consulate (London) and they will tell you what information you need in order to obtain this report. Your child will need this in order to obtain a US passport and to prove his/her status as a US citizen in the future, so you should obtain it as soon as you can.
Also wanted to add:
UK to have a father's name put on a birth certificate, if you are married and father isn't present to register you must take your marriage certificate.
If you are not married, the father of the child must be present with you to register or they won't put the father's name on the certificate.
Knowing this in advance will save complications later.

You have two seperate problems.
1. Your baby's passport. This is easy. Once your baby is born, and you have a UK birth certificate contact the US embassy, they will guide you through what you need to do . It is not complicated, it takes one visit, and you get babies passport and Social Security number in about a 2 weeks.
If you are concerned about overstaying your visa here, you have a pretty good excuse, you could contact the Homeoffice to ask for written permission to stay an extra week or so, but as they can't even keep track of peadophiles, one new mum American one week over her visa isn't going to concern them too much
Is the father here in the UK or the US? If he is here in the UK, and his name is on the birth certificate, and there is an issue of custody, if you take the baby out of the country without his permission it is parental kidnapping. If he makes one complaint the FBI will be the ones greeting you when you get off the plane. Do some careful research if you think this could be a problem.

I believe that there are certain restrictions placed on pregnant women flying - you will have to check with the airline - but you will most probably need a doctors certificate to say that you and your unborn baby are both fit enough to complete the journey.
If you find that you have to stay in the UK until your baby is born, don't worry - all you have to do afterwards is take the birth certificate along with your American passport to the US Embassy in London - and register the birth. Then you can apply for baby's passport.. and you'll both be free to go home. :-)

Just take the baby's birth certificate along with your passport to your closest US consulate/embassy. Your baby will still be a US citizen and he/she will receive a passport, it usually takes a few days and from what you said they might be willing to expedite the process since your visitor's visa is expiring. When you get ready to leave the country, if there is a father's name listed on the birth certificate you will most likely need a letter from him stating it is ok for you to leave the country (unless he is travelling with you). If there is no father's name listed, don't worry about this. All the best to you, it must be so hard to be ready to deliver at the same time your visa expires.

After you child is born. Go with all the baby's documentation and your documents showing US citizenship to the US embassy or a US consulate in the UK. Afterwards, register your kid as a US citizen by descent and they will be able to hook your baby up with a passport and other US documents. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe a baby can travel under his/her parent's passport.

Once the child is born, you will have to take the birth certificate and your passport to the US Embassy or US Consulate, and have a Record of Live Birth Overseas completed. This will establish your child as being born overseas of a US parent, and ensure that he/she will be recognized as a US citizen.

It's good to know you trust the Brits to deliver your child - thank you for that because I always thought it was the Americans that had good doctors. I think you would be best to speak to someone at the American Embassy, they will be able to cover any questions you may have.
You certainly wouldn't be able to fly as you're much to near your delivery date.

Well that was a bit silly coming over when u are that many months preganant?? u will have to register the baby here and then get a paaaport?? i dont know how that will work. ?? and that will mean u will have to extend ur passport at the embassy?? what a lot of stress to go through and hassel when u are pregnant. i would go back now if i were u!!!

Call the Embassy.
Wise One, where do you get the idea there is any sponging going on? Her visa doesn't expire until March and her concern is how to get her baby home, not how to stay there and sponge off anyone.

POP down to the us embassy asap and have a chat with them.
the paper work may be a bit long, but worth it.
