This is an intresting question. I was actually at a VIP event last night for the opening of Windows Vista...
#1 Know that we are all lab rats in a test cage for Vista...
#2 Vista is very expensive for an Operating System.
I was impressed with the new features in Vista, concerning the ease and quickness of SEARCH in windows, and also the way OFFICE 2007 performs is amazing. Ive never seen word documents easier, (there are lots of premaid templates and graphs to just drop in so you can create documents easier).
Totally impressed with the ease of use.
NOT impressed with how much performance it takes to run Vista, most people will look at havign to buy a new computer.
It is very easy to organize music on Vista and show it like a theatre, and it is very easy to create your own DVDs using a picture sliding program that you can actually insert transitions into with the click of a mouse etc...
I watched an actuall Microsoft rep, run through the windows showing various features.
My favorite thing about Windows Vista is the indexing search, which makes Windows VERY fast because it indexes differently than XP does and it makes things that you normally use and look at open very FAST...
There are so many PROS to Vista...
#1 Ease of use.
#2 Fast searching, everything you normally do made faster.
#3 Excellent for college studens using Office 2007.
#4 Making more advanced options a bit more explanatory and available for basic people and users.
#5 Great themes and organization.
#6 Good protection, the user account control will save a lot of people getting their machines hacked or destroyed by spyware.
CONS would be.
#1 Cost.
#2 Unknown bugs that may appear.
#3 All the automated crap that comes with Vista like Windows Defender etc... ( I want my own choice of virus/spyware protectiong)
#4 That some software wont be compatable, (I actually did an upgrade with the last beta version and found that all of my software worked just fine).
However, I recommend not buying it for at least 6 months to see how things go...
Also it is not nessecary to get it, unless you need it.
I personally like it, but I will probably stick with XP and Ubuntu for now.

I hate to butt-in and interupt everyone's infinite knowledge on Windows Vista, since you all have been using the RC2 release for 5 months, and have read the latest release of "Windows Internals", and are Certified Microsoft Professionals.
I'm just kidding. None of the negative reviewers fit that description. That would be me, rather.
Long story short:
XP is ancient. The technology is outdated and the flaws in it cannot be fixed by adding countless patches. You can't keep fixing an old dam with a roll of duct-tape. You have to knock it down and build a new one, learning from the mistakes of before. This is what Vista does for Windows.
Today you cannot run any modern software on Windows 95 because the technology is too new and evolved. Tomorrow you will not be able to run any future software on Windows XP for the same reason. The only reason why technology advances is the migration to a better and more advanced OS. You've been sitting on XP for over HALF-A-DECADE. It is time to shred it and move on.
As for Mac users (and here comes the sarcasm again):
You know what my favorite parts about Leopard are?:
1) The Media Center program built into the OS that gives you complete control over your TV and media files, being able to record one show while watching another, and so on.
2) The voice command feature that allows you to navigate your computer and create/edit documents without touching your keyboard/mouse.
3) The ability to wirelessly link to your XBox 360 and use it as a "set-top box" to send and receive Media Center files (TV, etc) in another room (or just buy a set top box that isn't a 360)
OH! That's right...Leopard doesn't have ANY of those! Those are all VISTA features. Man, sucks for your guys.
Listen, there's a reason why the world runs on Microsoft and not on Apple or Linux. Apple spends all their money on their "cool trendy image" and modifying pre-existing programs, making everything "more animated and...cool!". Linux has hot sluts modelling in their ads, and hippie communist college kids think its cool to use things based on who models for it, and its cool to be "anti-money and anti-corporation". Microsoft goes for features, and major changes/additions.
You can either upgrade now and get a jump-start on the future...but the next time you buy a PC, it will obviously come standard with Vista anyways. No manufacturer is putting XP on their machines anymore.
As for compatibility, I haven't had one issue in the many months of RC2 use, nor in the 2 days of my official Ultimate use.
You WILL need a decent processor and RAM, though. My system runs faster than ever with Vista, though my specs are:
HP Media Center PC
3GB RAM
3.4GHz Pentium 4 HT
512MB ATI Radeon Graphics Card running 2 big LCD displays
2 TV Tuner Cards

Eventually. Problem now is that all the major manufacturers will only provide Vista. Try getting an HP, Compaq, Dell, etc. with XP. They won't sell it any longer unless you purchase a business grade machine.
Hate how they strongarm you into buying Vista if you want a new machine. Dell offers machine without an OS, but you have to call them, and then those prices aren't the cheapest.
We all know MS track record with releasing software, why can't these places give the option on what we want and not what Microsoft wants us to have.

Absolutely no. VISTA IS A DOWNGRADE!!!!! Vista is Microsoft's attempt at complete control of all Premium Content. If you attempt to use any open source or non compliant software or hardware Vista can simply disallow driver function. Media addicts beware!!!! Think you legally purchased a song or movie, think again. With Vista you may have to re-purchase it in 6 months. All the new security they talk about is not for consumer security, but security for Premium Content. Try to create a back up copy of your favorite software or media and you'll see what I'm talking about. VISTA IS A DOWNGRADE!!!!!

I think Vista will bring a few cosmetic changes but overall it is still a Microsoft product, you do know what that means right?
As usual Microsoft puts out a product that will be unit tested by the end users and there will be a barrage of Service Packs and patches, but overall the look and feel will be closer to the Mac than a traditional Microsoft OS.

I don't think anything of the sort - I already KNOW it sucks. Haven't you tried it? Be sure to double your RAM and get a top end graphics card though... and even then it'll be as slick as a snail on ketamine...
Linux forever! Free, easy, and better than M$!!!

Like everything that is new, there will be plenty of bugs that will have to be worked out before it can do what it is advertised to do.I would NOT rush out to buy it right away, if I were you.

it doesn't matter, even if it isn't you will have to upgrade sooner or later to run things that require it. So you might as well do it soon..and YES I do think it's going to be a nice upgrade to XP.
