This idea can be puzzling to people such as yourself who arrange their names differently.

In most European cultures these days, a family has a fixed name that they pass from generation to generation through the male line. This is called the "family" name or, because it comes last when a name is mentioned, the "last" name. Until very recently, any women who married into that male line lost her own family names and adopted the family name of her husband. Each individual descendant also has a "given" name that is unique to that person: ie, John Jones and Marcia Jones, son and daughter of Michael Jones. Because that name is usually mentioned first, it is called a "first" name.

On the other hand, Indian names (just one example) consist of the native village name, then the father's single name, then a given, individual name, like Pallasena Akhileswaran Hariharan.

The running order of western name is exactly opposite to that of Asian name for Chinese, and Korean, they are always confused when they filled the embarkation or immigration form because all the forms are using the western format.
For Asian, the family name or surname is in the first word,in the first name column to be filled in the form, we address any person with the surname(family name) e.g. Mr.Lee or Miss Wong, the subsequence name followed is the given name for the Asian but it is become a first name in western way. The matter become even confused when the form do not using the word "surname " which Asian fully understand but instead put it as "family name" by which the Asian thought it must be the name the family members called him in their family home.

Very cool question. Sorry I'm late to get to it. Pavement's last tune was a song called "...and Carrot Rope" which is completely appropriate because it's a really cool song, but it comes off as kind of a silly afterthought (especially when you factor in that the song before it has a real album ender vibe). It is a weird, quirky song that doesn't quite fit the record. Perfect to put a bow on a weird, quirky band. I guess you would have to be into Pavement and to have heard it, but it is really perfect.

Last name is your family name. First name is the name that you were given. For example, in the name 'John Smith', "smith" is the last name and "john" is the first name.
