Bath, Cheap to get to on the train/drive and there's some cracking B+Bs. I stayed in a nice one 2 years back, think it'd set you back around £25 per person per night.
It's an amazing city, really enjoyed it and only 2 hopurs from London it was perfect for a there-and-back weekend.

Try the Bay Hotel Newquay. www.newquay-hotels.co.uk
You look out across the breadth of Fistral beach. Excellent views, walks, and food. Easy to get to by plane, road, or rail.
Contact me if you want to see some pics of the area. Just spent a long weekend there myself.

tub, Bristol, Oxford, Cambridge, Norwich, all sturdy for city breaks, having pronounced that a strategies as Brighton, Bournemouth, Hastings, Portsmouth, etc, relies upon what you prefer to do, how many all and sundry is going and your transport and funds. Personnaly i like the look of Cambridge or Oxford areas, plenty to confirm and do and extremely rural.
