On good bread, preferably homemade or from a quality bakery, spread a thin layer of real butter on both slices. Top with your favorite meat and add lettuce and tomato, if desired, and salt and pepper to taste. You will really taste the meat that way, pure and simple.
To walk on the wild side, butter the bread, top with sliced roast turkey, a layer of cranberry sauce, and a thin layer of cornbread stuffing. This is the best sandwich on earth. The same sandwich made with lingonberry jelly instead of cranberry sauce is also not to be sneezed at, even without the stuffing.

When I was young my cousin owned a bakery and would make a sweet bread with raisins. At easter he would make extra loaves for the family well I loved to take the leftover ham, fresh horseradish that my dad made and bread and butter pickles my grandma made. By the way my cousin would take the ham and wrap the sweet bread with raisin around it and bake it in the brick oven that he used for the bread. Talk about homemade all around. That is the best sandwich ever and I can't have them anymore because the bakery no longer exists. He tried to duplicate it in an oven at home, but it just was not the same.

Savoury spread.
Recipe
Chop onion and sweat it in pan with drop of water.
Make sure it doesn't boil dry.
Add chopped tomato to pan, stir and cook down, add grated cheese, stir often. next add egg and keep stirring, take it off heat before the egg sets or you will get scrambled egg.
Check seasoning.
Pour mixture into basin and allow to cool. Can be kept overnight in fridge.
This is tasty sandwich filler.

good question! it is not only the filling but the order in which the filling is arranged that matters. simple and delicious, cheese, lettuce, tomato, black pepper, thin slices of onion and salt and vinegar crisps. working inwards form the bread place cheese (strength to taste, personally the stronger the better) on both slices of buttered bread, then the lettuce again on both sides, then the tomato and onion on one slice and finally black pepper on the same side. put together and cut into triangles.

Depends on the type of bread. For rye, ham & sharp cheddar is awesome. For wheat, turkey and mayo. For white, peanut butter and jam, I like raspberry. I like bagels with cucumbers, creamcheese, cheddar cheese, and avacado.
