Last night on ESPN all 3 NASCAR experts picked their Top 5's and none of them had Dale Junior, Biffle, or Hamlin. Johnson and Kenseth were on all 3. They are the only drivers who have made the Chase all 3 years along with Mark Martin who is now semi-retired.

I forgot to add that I meant for the upcoming 2007 season. Most answered with all active drivers. While I think Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Richard Petty were great drivers, they were in the past. The questions should have read, "Who do you think are the 5 best drivers in NASCAR today?". Sorry for not verifying.

Well there is a huge difference between the best driver, and the best race team. A guy can be a great driver, but if his pit crew could not find a lugnut if it were put in front of them, he will have no chance at all. As for overall drivers, you really would need to look at who can excel on all different types of tracks. Who can make up ground on a road course without taking everybody else out on the track. For my money, the 5 best in no particular order would be Jeff Gordon, Dale Jr., Jeff Burton, Jimmie Johnson, and maybe Ryan Newman. By the end of the year, I would most likely put Kahn and Hamlin in there and take a couple other guys out. But Hamlin still needs to prove he can win on all tracks, and Kahne has to prove he can stay on the track during a road course. Tony Stewart slams everybody around the track, so I would not put him in there as a great driver, and Kenseth has the best Pit Crew that always puts him in a position to win. Put him with a poor crew and he will no nowhere.
