Hi - yes you need certain job skills that are in demand in Oz. I applied for PR in 2004 through a migration expert and it was granted in 2005 - I have since visited Oz and I live it - its a great place and I cant wait to migrate.
Check out www.immi.gov.au - it has some good info
Good luck and I hope you take the plunge!!!

You have to have a qualification or a skill that they need .Watch the programme Wanted Down Under.on BBC 1 in the morning and you might get a few ideas. They are in desperate need of Teachers Midwives nurses doctors anyone with a particular skill. The more qualified you are the more points you earn to further your application. If you can, visit Australia House in London and ask them what your chances are.or write to them.

Like many others have said, there´s a point system. Visit www.immi.gov.au to check if your career or job is on the MODL list (jobs on demand). The process takes up to a year or maybe 15 months, depending on your career. If you're British, it's faster. I did the whole thing (I'm from Venezuela) in one year and last December they granted me a Permanent Resident's Visa. You may either do it by yourself or hire a Migration Expert, who will make things easier and faster for you, for a fee of course. I ended up paying US$ 6.000 for me, my wife and two children, but I think it was worth it. Many people go through the process on their own, anyway, at a lesser cost.

You either need a lot of savings (about £100,000) or to be in a trade Australia wants workers to have (plumber, IT specialists, builder etc). It is a great place to live - I spent a month there recently and loved it.
You also need a family member to sponsor your citizenship and agree to pay all your bills and expenses if you become an economic liability.

I applied for immigration to Australia almost a year ago, hired a well known attorney who is a migration expert to assist me, and I am still waiting for words from DIMIA. Wish I had applied at New Zealand instead.

So you want to go and live in this place? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6313083.stm well I am here to tell you that it is a BAD idea. Full of ignorance, arrogance a diabolical government and PIMPS ! don't waste your young life getting caught up in this hole ! It is just a veneer of plastic attraction I tell you! The only thing pleasant about it are the noble immigrant cultures there such as Thais,Vietnamese and Koreans, who are mainly students or earlier 80's immigrants. But today, and I know because I have lived there (2000 to 2004) it is a shithole. And ...getting in ( ha ha, I did it easy and legit. !) is a conspiracy of trappings to stress you out, relieve you of your money and your dignity. Dead easy place to get credit cards though !! You can have my perm resi visa if you like for 10 pence !

Yes, you need the following:
Well spoken and written English
Hard working attitude
Have the ability to give back to the community rather then take our benefits
Understand and get involved in the Australian way of life
Don't go bragging to your 50 thousand relos about coming here and taking over
If you have all these then you are in!
Good luck
