I have a stamp in my (old) passport called Indefinite Leave to Remain, which allows me to remain, well, indefinitely. It remains valid so long as I don't leave the country for more than 2 years at one time.
They used to automatically transfer the stamp from an expired passport into a new one, but now they charge you over £200 to do so. However, they will still accept the stamp in your old passport - just bring both when you travel.
