What is c-diff?

C diff is a common enteric bacteria that makes up part of our normal flora, but unfortunately sometimes when people are perscribed broad spectrum antibiotics they wipe out all the gut bacteria except c. diff. Because there are no longer other bacteria in the gut to keep it in check, the c diff grows rapidly and takes over and becomes pathogenic. There has been a recent rise in ever more pathogenic strains of c diff in hospitals which are more resistant to treatments.

As well as specific antibiotic treatment, it would be a good idea to give your mum natural yoghurt. The lactic acid bacteria in it can normally be found in our guts and are harmless to us. These bacteria may be able to get a foot hold in the gut and start to push back the c diff. Re-establishing the natural flora balance is the key.
