I am an American leaving near Munich.
Check out toytownmunich.com and http://munich.usconsulate.gov/ for more info. The US embassy/consulate website has lots of helpful tips.
You really need to learn some basic German before the move. You can get along in Munich without German, but it will be a rocky road. Finding affordabale housing will be your biggest problem. Also, the bigger the dog the more problems you will have finding housing that will accept it. You can contact me personally at lederbikergene@yahoo.com for further tips and assistance. How long before the big move?

I have travelled a bit, but not to Munich.

Expect to find English speaking newspapers that advertise rental properties in suburbs where other English speaking people are. Your toddler will learn German quicker than you if you go hoping to stay in English speaking circles.

In Mexico City (I lived there for 5 years) I met families that had lived there for 17 years. The mother knew enough Spanish to go shopping. The daughter had an accent that could pass for Mexican when she spoke Spanish, or American when she spoke English.

Even though Munich will not seem like your home town, it will be very enjoyable if that is how you approach it.

Good luck to you and your family and have fun.

EDITED: Looks like some housing problems are developing in Munich. Hard to find a basic place let alone a place for the dog too (see link for Munich on-line newspaper in English - article on housing for 30/ Jan 2007)

You might have to get a real estate agent to find you the housing. It will be difficult to look for places when you call people on the phone. Some landlords speak and understand English but probably you won't understand their English. German housing has plenty of rules that unusual in the States, for example you can't shower (!!) after 10pm, no vacuum cleaning on Sundays etc. PS, in Germany you have to pay tax for your dog.

When you are using the service of an agent you most likely have to pay them commission about 2-3 months rent. Good luck.
