I have already considered things like a Ka and a Micra... is there anything really unique that I am missing?

It depends on how much you want to spend. What about the VW Beetle that is certainly very funky you can get all sorts of girly colours they even have a cabriolet version and they have great engines too. If you want really small I would say that French cars are very feminin and are worth a look particularly the Clio, which is a great little car. However, if you want reliability above all else then buy a slightly boring Toyota, Nissan.

All depends on your budget, if you're looking for something original then something new and recent is going to be less common. So looking at the latest new small cars we've got:

The Mini Cooper - very similar to the old one, some people love them, some hate them. A lot of customization on offer, hold value well and are nice to drive. Expensive.

The Peugeot 207 - Love or hate it looks again, comfortable with decent handling and good diesel engines. Smooth riding in typical French fashion. Too early to tell as far as reliability is concerned. Likely to become very common if the Peugeot 206 is anything to go by.

Vauxhall Corsa - Vastly different design direction, has won awards and looks to be a good car. Personally I can't stand the styling. Likely to become very very common.

Renault Clio - Refined & nice to drive with a smooth ride, too early to tell on reliability but the fit and finish is miles better. Has lost some of the flaws and the charm of the earlier Clios. Looks good.

Suzuki Swift - still not a common sight on the road. Good looking with some Mini style customization, nice interior, decent reliable engines and enjoyable handling. Well worth considering. Though Suzuki dealerships aren't that common and servicing costs will be higher than with a more common make.

Toyota Yaris - I think it's hideous. Should be reliable though.

Cheap option - Citroen C2 - Funky little city car with brilliant diesel engines.

Expensive/larger option - Honda Civic - Space age looks inside and out, a stunning car unlike anything else on the road.

Check them out on the net and see if you like the looks of any of them. Then go and book a few test drives.

If there is only you and a partner likely to want to be in the car, you won't go far wrong with a Smart For Two. Both myself and my husband have one and the tax is only £40 a year, insurance is very low and the petrol usage is phenomenal. They are very reliable cars, built by Mercedes and you can park them anywhere. There are NCP car parks in London where you only pay 20% of the fee with a Smart car. They come in funky colours, you can get a cabriolet and they do the Brabus version which is very fast and it has all the goodies.

The Ford Ka and Fiesta are cheap and reliable, the Mini is reliable but not cheap, Nissan Micra and Toyota Yaris are reliable and relatively cheap but a bit dull. All French cars are unreliable junk. (See recent episodes of Watch Dog on BBC for the dangers of the Clio) VW Polo is reliable but not that cheap. Vauxhall Corsa has just been named European Car of the Year. Lots of choice out there you need to make a shortlist and ask again.

I personally like and love the new Mini Cooper. It has stayed with its original looks, followed up with better performance.
