On the back of a bank? Or a credit card?
Assuming the latter: they are used as a fraud prevention mechanism.

It means the bank can tell you are actually in possession of the card because you can read the numbers to them. Otherwise somebody may just have got hold of your card details and is using them fraudently.
It isn't foolproof but better than nothing.
