In my life I have joined 3 gyms, and gone for 6 months before getting bored and stop going. I am slightly overweight and would like to be buff. At the start i'm very motivated but overtime it gets harder and harder to go prefering to go to the pub/watch tv. I've tried going with friends, having a plan, and doing classes instead of the floor for variety. I'm just not "addicted" to it like some people.

I'm still paying a membership and really do want to go again, but i'm not sure its worth it because 6 months down the line I know i'll stop again.

Well, you say you've tried going with friends, but are they as un-motivated as you?? If they are, that's possibly why you've stopped. I always found that going with someone who really wanted to go made me drag myself along.

Have you tried promising yoursef a "treat" of some kind?? So, you could say, "well, if I go to the gym on Thursday and burn some calories, I can go out and have a pint in the pub. If not, I have to stay at home." If you can stick to this it's great, but if it's something you feel you would just give up on then don't try it in the first place, it'll just make you feel crap.

Also, you could do some kind of exercise other than going to the gym. You don't say if you want to work specifically on your weight, or to build up certain muscles, or even just a general workout. You could try going running or cycling, which you can do either on your own or in a group. Swimming is also a good idea as it works all of the muscle groups.

If you still want to go to the gym, try making yourself enjoy it more, if you like music get an mp3 player and take it with you. To keep yourself motivated over time, keep a chart of how you're doing, how much weight you're losing, how long you can exercise for and how this is improving, etc, and ask yourself if you realy want to let that all slip back again??

Lastly, tell someone you know what you're trying to achieve, and I'm sure they'll give you encouragement which can make all the difference. Good luck!

your money BACK and work out at home!

Personally if I had that money I'd buy equipment it's cheaper than the gym and I don't have to spend an hour to get there and back. I'm hoping to get the igallop :0) I'm being harassed by some gym calling everyday and reality is that money would pay for an igallop severl time over. NO WAY am I going to sign up with them.

I'm not THAT stupid.

K, lets think about this. You want to go to the GYM why?
To get buff? Why do you want to get buff?

Now that we got past the obvious think of this. If is something you really want you'll do it. Lame excuses like "I'm just not addicted to it." are silly. Are you addicted to brushing your teeth or showering? How about eating?
No. But you do them and you don't complain about it, too much.

So, I'd say either get your a** up and go, or quit. Because it comes down to what do YOU WANT. For you see, an amazing thing happens when you tell your body to do something. IT DOES IT.

So, GO!

Or don't.

Try a class if your gym does them, like kickboxing or box aerobics, these are excellent for getting fit, and much more enjoyable than just the gym. Alternatively, I am starting to do road running as it is less boring than using the treadmill at the gym, tones you up fantastically and it doesnt cost anything.

the best way ,is to start eating healthy, you will have so much energy you will want to go to the gym. its alot different than going to the gym because you think you should.. when the body is energised it wants to exersise. but this only works if you eat very healthy food and omit alcohol sugar processed foods cigeretts and drugss. I am a health freak and cant sit down. I all started when I changed my eating habbits. Fruits veggies grains seeds nuts. no white flour products... etc.

Well i was like you,i was too overweight and desperate, but suddenly i thought bout my self and my look.i was really disgusted from my self. i liked gym at first and hated it after a while, but why this is coz my training was wrong. But i had a friend who was good looking and his body was really in good shape. i was quite jealous and i wanted to be like him, so i told him that i wanna have a good body shape. he motivated me and i was really motivated. its tiring a little bit and hard but u have to be patient. what motivated me more is that the difference my body had. now its gettin in shape and my look got better, which motivated me more to continue and pursue my goal. Dont give up , be patient, and try to learn from your friends, dont feel down and always look forward. give it at least six months and you will notice a great difference at the end of the 6th months(take pic of urself before and later and see the difference-u will be shocked). Also learn from others in the gym. just seeing them havin good bodies and committed to excercise make me feel jealous and make me wanna be better and i become better eventually, i made friendships with them and i learn from them coz they would help u sometimes if they noticed ur doin some excercise wrong. try to train with a coach he will be of great help.

Just continue man, put a goal infront of you and pursue it

pretend it's a fast food joint and they are giving out free food! Seriously, why not just exercise home watching TV? You can buy home equipment on-line. Just push the dumb bells and stare at soaps.
