See, the Quran states the basic things and the most important things..
the Quran did not mention every single thing, therefore, scholars used the basic rule about something and measured it on the new things such as smoking...
actually many scholars believe that it smoking should be forbidden although some do not agree..so it is a disputed matter..but see drugs is forbidden and agreed upon the ruling for it..
smoking isn't as harmful as drinking alcohol, taking drugs/eating pork etc..

Dear Wa'likumussalaam warahmatullah Alcohal or intoxication is totally banned by every one. Smoking Marijauna brings the same affects as Alcohal, . Smoking Cigarettes is harmful to Human health which causes Cancer and it is forbidden in Islam to harm oneself. Smoking is nothing but a form of slow suicide. The Qur'an says: "And slay not the life which Allah hath forbidden..." Surah, Al-Isra, 17: 33 "And make not your own hands contribute to your destruction." Surah, Al-Baqara, 2: 195 "Nor kill or destroy yourselves for verily Allah hath been to you most Merciful." Surah, An-Nisa, 4: 29 This is from Holy Quran, which Muslims cannot deny. Even Governments from all over the world started realizing the ill effects of Smoking and they have banned smoking in work premises and public places. Even India has banned it last week. what I do not understand is while these Governments have banned Smoking in Public places after realising its ill effects, but still they do not ban manufacturing and selling cigarettes totally so as to earn the tax money out of it. That is too sad. Same thing with alcohal too, except in few Islamic countries. Hope it satisfied you. May Allah guide all of us and Ummah in particular towards straight path Aameen.

It is obvious that smoking did not exist in old ages. Yet, god made it clear. He said anything that causes harm to your health is forbidden. So alcohols? U know what **** drunk people do then regret about it. Pork? Pigs live & eat dirt so unhealthy meat. Smoking? Bad for the health, so should be avoided. God wants the best for us. However, rarely people listen.

Smoking was discovered and adopted by muslim's long after the forbidding note on alcohol and pork, but any true and intelligent muslim will abstain from smoking if he/she reads these lines from the holy book:

Islam prohibits any action that causes harm to oneself or to other people. Allah says (what means):

Do not kill yourselves, Allah is indeed merciful to you.

Do not cast yourselves, with your own hands, into destruction.

And the Messenger says: No harm may be inflicted on oneself or others.

The feet of a human being will not depart, on the day of the judgment, from his standing before his Lord, until he is is questioned about five things: his lifetime - how did he pass it, his youth - how did he used it, his wealth - where did he earn it and how did he spend it, and how did he follow what he knew.

Whoever consumes poison, killing himself with it, then he will he consuming his poison in the hellfire, and he will abide in it permanently and eternally.

Good question....
In this modern days of time all have said that all things are possible to do. But we have to suffer all the consequences out of the result we are doing.

Our body is considered as the temple of GOD and so it is sacred.

Now as we mature in our relationship with GOD we learned, we earned and the most we become more awake what is right and what is wrong. Doing things in excess is really harmful to our body.

Drinking alcohol in excess is harmful to our body and we know it but why drink when know it is harmful that is when we do not have any more control on things like this.

Eating pork is up to you, nobody is forcing you to eat it. If we are going back God created all things beautiful. Their are provisions stated that pork is not to be eaten because of the situation of this animal before time. Time have changes to now and we have already tamed this animal into domesticated one.

And we all know that all things given in thanks in the name of GOD will be cleaned.

What we have to be very careful is the things that come out from the mouth, for what come out from the mouth comes out from the heart.
For the food that is taken into our mouth will soon come out.

Cigarette smoking will no benefits in our body but why we still smoke. This is what it calls the spirit is strong but the flesh is weak and will suffer for the consequences that brings this habitual weaknesses.

Since we now know cigarette smoking is harmful, it would technically be forbidden for a Muslim to smoke.

"...make not your own hands contribute to your destruction..." (Surah al-Baqarah 2:195)
