is downloading songs in limewire really free? if not, in what way i am paying every song that i download from it?

It's free, but if you download songs for free that are covered by copyright law then you are in violation of international law and could be prosecuted. The RIAA has prosecuted thousands of people (for example, see the story at http://www.riaa.com/news/newsletter/013106.asp) for illegal downloading of music. Most of the defendants end up paying a fine of about $7500 plus court costs. Others have paid more. Only one or two have actually won against the RIAA in court, and they're still out thousands of dollars in court costs and legal fees.

So if you do decide to download free music using limewire and it's covered by copyright law (meaning it's a CD you can purchase in a store or online), make sure you have about $10,000 in the bank, just in case. Then again, $10,000 will buy a lot of legal CDs.

Limewire was the first file sharing program to support firewall-to-firewall file transfers, a feature introduced in version 4.2, which was released in November 2004.

they are free, but technically illegal depending on where you are from. but only if you get caught, which you wont
