Seems that many people think that casualty means a dead person.

Casualties does not mean death, it means someone is injured. I was in Iraq last year and when we hear a casualty, we know that someone is injured. KIA means someone is killed. It's more straight forward.

No Shiite! Yet many do not understand the relationship between battlefield casualty and death a few days later. During the civil war a wound usually resulted in death a few days later. During the Battle of the Bulge the US suffered 81,000 casualties and of those 21,000 were either killed or died later. Better medical response and follow up.

Yes I did.

Many news agencies still associate war casualties with death totals with this as far as I see.

It was always been my thought that a war casualty can be an injured soldier or civilian? Am I wrong?

Casualty means an injured person, not necessarily a death.

Of course. A casualty refers to dead and wounded. It is a term used to define those who are no longer able to fight.

The number of dead and wounded American soldiers is suprisingly low when compared to our other wars. In Viet Nam over 1000 died each month.

Anyone who is even remotely sane should know that people will die and get wounded in a war. Sad as it may be, that is reality.

Yes, I knew that, although the press doesn't do a good job of explaining that when it talks about casualties.

It's good that you pointed that out.

A casualty is anyone who has been lost due to death, wounds, capture or even desertion, at least until their exact whereabouts are known.

Some of us know what casualty means, some don't..I think its a mild way of saying something bad, lessening the blow of the reality war holds.

Yes I now this that is why they go to great pains to list the dead and wounded on the TV news and some put the permanently wounded in yet another category
