Contact the DAV and see if they have an appointment for you. Since you are working straight with them, you should not contact the VA directly. So, the first step is to contact the DAV. Don't expect to see any money anytime soon. To prove disability can last months. Mine took almost a year. However, if you have a serious disability (amputee, burns, etc.), then it will be quicker. If you DAV representative fails to respond back to you, then contact the VA and ask them to make an appointment for you.

I am assuming the DAV is acting on your behalf as intermediary with the VA. While you don't mention what you are filing a claim for and it is none of my business, you need to know that a claim can take many months to work through the system. My first claim took over 18 months to be resolved but also took 3 months for me to even see a doctor. The key here is to be patient and to be able to provide more evidence if asked for it. Do not lose your cool. If you do, I can promise your claim will find its way back to the bottom of the stack. Hang in there and good luck!

This process takes MONTHS!!! I filed and it took a year before I got full benefits and if they don't find you at least 20% then you will have to pay for medical care at the VA clinic or hospital. You will get back pay though when your case is determined. The letter to see a doctor will come within 3 months of your claim. If you are unable to work I strongly suggest that you also apply for social security disability! It is also a long term action BUT you get back pay there as well. You should file NOW in conjunction with your VA disability claim and they should both be settled at the same time. If you are denied by social security TWICE, you go get a social security lawyer, (they don't get paid unless you are approved), and let them set up your hearing. If you work you are not entitled to disability. So many people try to abuse the system and it makes it harder for legitimate cases sometimes. Good luck with your claim!

I would call DAV and see if where the claim is, also a helpful resource is your county veterans representative they can sometimes get am inside scoop.

I applied in April 04, went on t-leave, and didn't hear anything until Sep 04. Then I found out that the VA can't do anything until you're completely out of the service. Since my retirement date was 1 JUL 04, I had a pretty good response time.

Something to remember, whatever you get, challenge it! The way they are set up, you have to challenge any rating that you receive.

Thanks for your service, and good luck. Oh, and congrats on the retirement.
