Is to bring them back alive?

Speaking as a war veteran that is a good idea, but only if the mission is accomplished.

People who volunteer for the military and are sent to war do so with the understanding that the mission is more important than their life.

If they lack this perspective then they probably should not have signed up, doesn't matter if you agree with the politics, the mission given by your Commanding Officer is what counts.

Some would say that is easy for me to say, i came back alive having only prolonged health issues and left 2 of my friends behind, but i lived.

The truly best way to both support and honor our troops is to have politics truly "end at the waters edge", like that will ever happen these days.

EDIT:

I have been thinking about this today.

It seems to me that people who feel the way the person who ask this question feel come from 3 lines of thought:

1. they are against all war, no matter the reason, at all times. - this i respect

2. they are against this war because they hate Bush and any/everything he stands for. - this is stupid, polls recently indicate that up to 20% of the population hate Bush so much they cheer on America's enemies as long as it hurts Bush, these people should not be listened to.

3. they feel bad when they hear about a soldier being killed on the news and want to feel good so we should bring the troops home. - this is selfish, narcissistic and rather pathetic, it is also very common, these people need help to get over their delusion of self importance.

so i wonder which of these lines of thought the person who ask the question falls into?

personally i was opposed to starting this war, i would have preferred to see Syria or Iran be dealt with, Saddam was in check. However now that we are there stabilizing and rebuilding that country is the only option, anything else endangers everyone in the region and the world.

The best way to support the troops is to have a political process that ensures our leaders have the best interests of the nation in mind when they deploy its military.

Of course soldiers must do what they are told but would it be wrong for an army to rebel against a corrupt administration?

The question is, does Bush have the interests of the American people in mind or is he enhancing his own personal wealth and power? Why did he become a politician in the first place? To benefit humanity???

And why does he say he can win this war when everyone else seems to believe it is quite impossible. If you ask me he knows he will lose (as far as his stated goals are concerned) and either has another agenda or like the American people he is too stubborn and arrogant to admit defeat. It's just a shame (nay a hideous outrage) that he is playing with the lives and futures of others.

I don't think that having the troops fight a war that essentially is not a war that can be won is ridiculous. The Middle East is only erupting in more and more violence as we continue to try to win the war in Iraq. If it wasn't for the alleged weapons of mass destruction the troops wouldn't be there in the first place. I don't think there is ultimately going to be enough man power to go after every country harboring terrorists and protect our own country from people who wish to do us harm. We need to worry about the home front and bring the military home.

I think alot of these young men and women are not even adequately trained for the war. Many of them are sent fresh out of boot camp. I hardly think that is enough experience to be thrown out into a war zone. I believe that our men and women in uniform are supposed to defend our country but only if it's a war with just cause.

Why is it that everyone is prepared to speak for the troops? Why do YOU think you know what it means to support the troops? Why do you think that supporting the troops means to bring them home alive? The troops are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country, so it isnt supporting them to simply bring them home and let them live. In FACT, many troops I know WANT to go and fight for their country! They are asking to deploy because they want to get the job done. Shows how little you know about the troops. I get SO sick of troop mentality being politicized by people who have no idea of what the troop mentality is!

Support the troops by sending letters of support and care packages. Send calling cards, send gift cards that they can spend at their exchange. Send emails. THAT is how you can show support. Tell their children how brave they are for sending mom or dad off to war. Give a spouse a gift card so she can go get her hair cut. Sure makes my husband feel good to know that people over here are taking care of me and our children while he is deployed. He sleeps better knowing all is well on the homefront. THAT is supporting the troops!

We all want them alive, but supporting our troops means supporting them in what they believe in.They want to finish their job.As other foreign countries see,we no longer have the stomach to defend America because of pacifists.People die in wars, people die at home everyday. We need to finish the job and let our brave soldiers have the honor of doing so.Too many arm chaired generals think they know whats best for this country...if the liberals hadnt tied the hands of our soldiers and let them fight the war the way it should be fought, they would have had the job done by now.You libs cant have it both ways..,stay out of the war!!!!

By the way..,theres not too many soldiers that are libs..,I wonder why.

Send them a care package with food, magazines, newspapers and anything else that you can think of from home. Things that are sent from home increases morale. Sometimes, have a kindergarten school write some letters.

Yes, bringing them back home is right. But, the mission is still active so the best thing to support them is to send them things that says "We Support You".

The best way to support our troops is to QUIT BAD MOUTHING THEM AND THE MISSION!!!! This is their job! Do you actually think they don't hear what the media and American public has to say about them while they are sitting in the sandbox?? Raising moral-and letting them know we stand behind them, even if one does not agree with the war is the best way to support our troops! If you don't stand behind our troops-please feel free to stand in front of them!

Did you think of that Freedom is loose? Do you think of that we could continually pass smoke a joint with Iraq and tell them they're ok? Do you think of we could continually combat with plant life instead of bullets? Do you think of that Bush is answerable for 9/11 instead of Clinton even in spite of the undeniable fact that Clinton is the only that didnt take Osama the 1st time? Do you think of that conflict is lost reason? are you taking section in non violent sleep at night whilst women and adult adult males persons are distant places combating to your freedom to make such ignorant feedback like what you probably did above? have an amazing day

what youve mentioned is a horrible way to support our troops. it does not look at why they are there. i think a better way is to follow the plan to defeat al qaeda and keep us all alive. that is why they are there. no known attack on us soil since 911 because weve engaged al qaeda...you need to stop reading the pelosi press releases and look at the facts. even robert gates says the pelosi/ reid cut and run will embolden the enemy and bring them here. regardless of whether more soldiers are alive or not...cut and run is a horrible strategy and should be abandoned.
