In the Episcopal church (and I suspect the Catholic church as well) we devide the year into segments so we can remember and push into different aspects of the life of Jesus.

So for example we're currently coming out of Epithany where we think about the wise men comming to Baby Jesus and sharing our faith with others, then we will have Lent where we let the weight of our need of God sink in before we celebrate Easter when we see how God met us in our need. After that we have Ordinary Time where nothing much happens before we start Advent where we prepare ourselves to think about Jesus coming to earth at Christmas (and how Jesus will return to earth one day etc).

I find it helpful to have the cycle of how ever I'm feeling I push into that specific aspect of Jesus.

You could probably find the exact dates for the liturgical calender (along with more specific events within this) if you checkout church of England online

The Liturgical calendar lists the dates the church "celebrates". Usually you can find one at an Episcopal church. Lent and Advent are purple. Christmas and Easter are white and "normal" days are green. I don't remember all the others, but it also points out what saint's days are observed. The colors also will apply to what the priest wears and the colors on the altar. These apply mostly to the Liturgical churches....Catholic, Episcopal and some Lutheran
