Lice don't actually do anything to your hair, but they attach themselves to the roots of your hair, and bite your scalp to ingest blood as food. The itchiness comes from the minute bit of venom that they inject, which works as an anti-coagulant to keep the tiny wound from scabbing over. They can spread disease, as you might imagine, rather like any other biting insect. Most of the time, it's possible to see lice eggs or "nits" near the roots of the hair. You can get a lice comb and comb through your hair a few times to see if you find nits or adult lice. If you do find them, of course, you will need to treat your hair and scalp with a reliable treatment.

On BBC News 24 today there was a big item on this. The thread of it was that most of the preparations you can buy are not very effective - the little swine are building immunity. Received wisdom is now to wash your hair, apply a good load of conditioner and work it in well, straighten your hair as best you can, and then comb it through, area by area, with a fine - preferably metal - nit-comb. Sounds great eh?! After each comb stroke you wipe the comb off on a tissue, and the resulting goo will contain drowning nits, and more importantly, the attached eggs that will hatch unless removed. An egg makes a nit. A nit can lay many, many eggs in one day, so you need to be thorough. Patch by patch, area by area, twice a week, for three weeks. If you go to:

bbc.co.uk

you can download todays News 24 podcast and get all the info, including a demo of how it's done.

I hope this is helpful.

You'll have an unbearably itchy scalp, and chances are someone will have noticed after a week of being infested with lice. They're easily visible if someone has a good look for you.

You will see tiny louse eggs around your scalp, (part your hair and look at it in the mirror)

It's easily treated.

When you itch your head alot especially around the ears and you find little black things, those are the eggs. You might even pull out a little lice piece too. I think their hard to kill...but they're black or white color. You might also feel things actually crawling on your head. They don't do nothing to your hair, but they can suck the blood from your scalp and lay their eggs there too.

It can be easily treated, theres a lot of creams and medicine out there to get rid of them. I suggest you immediately treat them before they start multiplying.

Itching and growing to lay sacks of eggs in your scalp and skin.
See a Doctor or get a kit to kill the nits and their eggs and wash it in this 3X often Stay away from who gave them too you also.
Prevent others from getting it and change bedding and wash cloths and clothes... It says it is embarassing but the need to stop the spead of the bug starts by staying home and then working it out in the washings. You will be OK and all races can get the critters...
