Hi Laus!!
Although pet insurance has been available for approximately 20 years, many pet owners have never heard of it and are surprised that such a thing would even exist.

When deciding whether or not to buy a health insurance policy for your pet, you have to ask yourself a few questions. Do you consider your pet to be a member of the family? Would you be unable to pay for (potentially) thousands of dollars in medical bills if your pet develops cancer or needs long-term medical care? Would it absolutely break your family's heart to have to euthanize your pet because you didn't plan ahead for potential health crises? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, then you'll want to seriously consider purchasing an insurance policy for your pet.

What Kind of Pet Insurance Is Available?

Pet insurance is now available through a multitude of specialty companies; and, just as with your average health insurance plan, the higher the premium, the greater the range of benefits you and your pet receive. The average plan costs anywhere from $20 - $40 per month and has either no annual benefit limit at all or a limit of approximately $15,000 - $20,000. Many plans offer discounts for coverage of multiple pets. Your deductible will be determined by the plan you choose, but the average is approximately $100 per year.

PetPlan is abit more expensive but you can guarantee they pay promptly and dont quibble or bring in a tiny clause at the last minute to get out of paying. They've saved my brothers' dogs hundreds of pounds in vets fees. Our own pet insurance was with a cheaper online insurance company E&L but who were the biggest con merchants both for the vet and for us. Havent used Tescos or Sainsburys. I think a dedicated pet insurance company (like PetPlan for e.g.)is probably best, all the others cover other insurances as well.

none its just another way of makeing money you always have to pay the first 60 pounds or more i dont believe in insurance its better to open an account in the bank and pay that money you would pay the insurance in to doggys account and then its always there if you need it for the vet and that way if you dont use it then its a blessing and will mount up because you could pay insurance for pet at arround 7 to 8 pounds a month if not more and if you dont use the insurance then you have lost all that money but if you have a dd pay into doggy acc as i do then its always there and if not use think what you would save in the pets life and if you need it then you can take it out to pay a vet bill that is what i do and its so good to see that money growing in your bank acc instead of giveing it away to someone who sometimes you have to fight to get them to pay a bill

Just an -opinion none of them are.
Since the introduction of pet insurance vet fees have escalated way beyond
'Joe Bloggs' pocket so that it is now essential.

frinstance, (and I dont begrudge a penny,)
my £2.50 to purchase ferret cost £88.00 to have castrated and a further £25.00 microchip.
He then developed an abcess which cost £88.00 to drain, yes they do need
special anaesthetic.
At my regular cash only, no credit cards or insurance the castration on another ferret cost £25.00 the chip £15.00.
On the plus side the average vet. practice is much better equiped and informed (albeit these days there is a tendancy to diagnose by internet rather than experience)
So the question should be which is the best Vet.

I found they all hike the price as the dog gets older, I went on the National Farmers Union site, and found an insurer through there, and they do a cheaper insurance which doesn't penalise you when your dog gets older. I cant remember the name but have a look

I shopped around when looking for my dogs insurance and More Than gave the best quote, be sure to ask when you take it out if the will exclude conditions at renewal that you have claimed for in the previous year, if they do and your dog has a re-curring problem or a problem linked to it then you will end up paying for it yourself. Don't know if Morethan do this at renewal as still have not got round to organising it!

i use MORE THAN they have been excellent - my dog has an eye condition and all i have to do is send my claim form to the vets - they fill it in and send it back to MORE THAN - i have a cheque back within a week covering the costs i have paid out less the excess. your vet should advise you on which insurance companies are good to work with - after all its easier for the vet if the insurers pay out without any hassle!
