Seesh so many idiots here... I'm start to get really worried about people take up american style kick boxing then open school and call it "Muay Thai".
They both are different. The way they fight, throw techniques, and rules are different.
Thai boxing tend to focus more on kicks, elbows, knees, and clinch work. They also use some sweep from clinch. Clinch may seems simple but it's actually very complex. It's whole new level of game. There's so many you can do in clinch beside knees and elbows. Also the way they kicks are different from kick boxing but kick boxing copied them, so now most kick boxer use Thai style kicks. Muay Thai also have kicks to legs which is illegal in kick boxing. Muay Thai have their own unique blocks when compared with kick boxer. Kickboxer tend to have boxer and karate/TKD blocks.
Kick boxing as originally created, is hybird of boxing, karate, and tae kwon do. They use to kicks more like karate/tae kwon do and kick with foot instead of shin. They tend to put more focus on using hands than kicks. They use to have no knees. basically it's like boxing with karate/TKD kicks add in.
However today many kickboxing has picked up Muay Thai game and become similar to Muay Thai. So it can be extremely difficult to tell if someone is doing kick boxing or Muay Thai UNLESS they stick to their old american style kick boxing rules (YUCK!).
Also kick boxing has become a general name for any stand up sport that are similar to Muay Thai or kickboxing. For example K-1, K-1 Max is kick boxing.
Lastly, today it's hard to tell who do Muay Thai or kickboxing. Many people also think Mirko Cro Cop do Muay Thai, this is untrue. Mirko Cro Cop has NEVER done Muay Thai, he do boxing, tae kwon do, and karate, branko simply pick up Muay Thai techique and teach it to his students. Don't believe me? go do some research on branko Cikatic (Mirko's first teacher).
Hope this answer your question.

Thai boxing was developed as a Fighting art and not a sport like Kickboxing.
In both the arts you can Kick and Punch, but in Thai Boxing you can use the elbows and knees.
In todays Thai Boxing Gloves are used, but when the art was used 100's of years ago they didn't wear gloves, they just had their hands wrapped in a hemp cloth. If you visit Stadiums in Thailand they sometimes demonstrate these techniques without gloves.
Kick Boxing is a derivative of Sport Karate, in this sport, kicks and punches are scored for hitting targets and there are certain parts of the body that cannot be hit. Below the waistline cannot be hit with a kick unlike in Thai Boxing, where this is a very highly used target.

Kickboxing is a generic term for a sporting martial art that, while similar to boxing, uses the feet as well as the hands for striking. Kickboxing can be practiced for general fitness, or as a full-contact combat sport. The male boxers are bare chested, bare foot and wear a boxershort. The female boxers sometimes wear a tank top and shorts. Kickboxing is sometimes practiced as an independent style however in many cases kickboxing is just an event and set of rules of by which martial artists of other styles may compete openly. Typically kickboxing in many competitions is a standing fight sport and does not allow continuation of the fight once the fight has reached the ground, however some styles may still train in this component for example; sanshou especially in the military and police and so must be adapted for kickboxing tournaments as well as many Japanese martial arts. Kickboxing can be attributed to K series of fighting styles. There are different rules for different kinds of kick-boxing.

Muay Thai: utilizes alot of techniques that would otherwise be banned in Kickboxing like elbow, kneeing, clinching onto and kneeing someone's head.
Kickboxing: only punch and kicks.
