it is caused by an airborne bacteria called "sleepies". the infected person yawns; thus, spreading the bacteria into the air. the bacteria is inhaled by the neighboring new host and immediately circulates into the blood stream, and gains access to the brain. the bacteria bounces, dances and sings lullabies to the brain. this debilitating effect of the bacteria causes the new host to yawn. heheheh just pulled it out of my bottom. really the answer is seeing someone yawn reminds you that you need some oxygen to the brain i guess.

In a classroom it's definitely infectious
If one student yawns the lecturer(prof) will feel insulted and
scold him.
But when one(student) sees other students yawning ,he will feel relaxed and think the stuff , the prof is saying is really boring and
,how many students is the prof going to scold,so I can yawn
freely.

I read somewhere once that it was due to the difference in air pressure a yawn near you makes, this confuses your equilibrum in your inner ear and your body responds by yawning to right itself! this would explain why you dont have to see anybody yawn, to yawn in response.
However this might be utter crap!
As for yawning when your tired, its supposed to be the most effective way of inhaling more oxygen, as you breathe far more shallow when your tired.
Again could be crap!

Yawning is triggered by having less oxygen in the brain, so we are forced to take in a deep breath. So when we yawn next to some one we suck the surrounding air away from them so therefore making them yawn (i know it is not true, but you said be imaginitive!)
Do you know reading this is making me yawn, try and explain that one!!!

People yawn when they're tired. Therefore, when two people yawn together, the only logical next step is to sleep together. As I see it.

from pre-historic times, you yawn when someone else does because your brain thinks they are stealing your oxygen so you yawn to get a bigger intake.
