Broth is the name of a type of soup usually made by boiling Meat, Fish or Vegetables in water. It is Old English and is related to the Old Norse "Broth" and Old High German "brod- brodein", To boil.

I think the history was just that. When people years ago, all over the country couldnt afford to buy food every day they used leftover meat, vegetables etc and cooked it all up in a pot to last a few more days.
