Since no one knows what God looks like, I reckon if you make an image of God it would probably look like the idol is being worshipped rather than God...I'm not so sure

An object becomes an idol when it is assigned power....for instance, a "lucky charm"
I wear a cross. I don't pray to the cross and I don't worship the cross. I wear the cross as a visual reminder to myself. It reminds me that I am a child of God and I belong to Him. Every time I look in the mirror or catch my reflection I am reminded. It would become an idol if I were to wear my cross for good luck or in thinking God will bless me because of it.
No doubt some people would say something like, "why do you need to be reminded"....to which I would say......
I believe Jesus is God incarnate. Therefore, it is proper to pray to Jesus.
I do not pray to anything man made. Why bother worshiping the middle man? I go straight to the top. It is rather like someone who is a big fan of.....say.....Stevie Wonder....and given the opportunity to attend a live concert or buy the latest CD the fan chooses the CD over the person. That would be placing the idol (the CD) before the being (Steve Wonder).

To have an idol is a sin because God said not to make any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. If we disobey him then we're in sin and are serving the devil, with consequence.

if you are refferring to Christians making a demigod out of Jesus? It is still a sin, moreover it is a cardinal sin. There should be no other gods before God, however every Christians pray to Jesus instead. There should also not be any graven images of God, but all Christians have the symbol of Jesus on the cross. This is another reason why muslims say and believe that Christians are morons and infidels.

Most Christians are idolaters, they have their little statues and pictures of Jesus, the cross, Mary, saints, etc. and they look at those pictures or statues and sometimes pray to Jesus when they look at them, that is idolatry in a nutshell. Christians will say that idolatry involves actually worshipping a statue, but nobody is stupid enough to believe that a hunk of rock is a god. It is simply a representation of a god that is used exactly like the jesus statues and pictures.

To each his own, let GOD decide what pleases and displeases HIM.
Too many people are out to prove their arguement, as fuel to fire their own group, or as a fuel not to believe in religions.
Whatever the reason, let GOD decide when the time come as to what it signifies and how the believer holds the object.
Too many religions and people think they have the ability to intrepret GODs will as if they were The Almighty themselves, when everyone seems to lack the tolerance and understanding towards eachother.

First, there is no representation of God so an image of Him is pointless.
Second, idols are made by people, why worship things made by people?
Third, if we have Him why worship an idol?
Fourth, because he told us not to, and thats that.

Most Christians are paranoid about this,God /Christ is not offended by sacred images, the problem only arises if Christians have images of false gods,it seems that they cannot see past this perfect holier than thou sense that prevails.

Yes, because it is worshipping bits of stone, wood or paint. That is wrong from a theistic perspective.
