To say 'He/She' is a little clumsy and to say 'It' is a little impersonal, besides, in the times where the idea developed, many people would only accept a male version of God, so, the 'rules' of society prevailed. No, you are not saying His name in vain.

When Christianity was on the rise, we were living in a very patriarchal society....women didn't have a lot of clout, so it wasn't even considered that God could be a woman. Since then, hardcore Christians are reluctant to ever go against what the Bible says....so God is just assumed to be a man.

The original Hebrew actually refers to the female. Yet Judaism was a patriarchal religion who held no place at all for women in authority or otherwise. In which case, the Hebrew feminine name should not have been used if they were trying to be consistent. However other religions that existed well before Judaism came onto the scene were matriarchal, which Judaism was unique in that it fought to have nothing to do with them in that aspect.

It is the limitation of the English language and grammar, not God's limitation. So, god can be either he, she or it, all 3 are not proper.
Calling the creator of the universe, in three letters (god) itself, is a gross limitation of the english language.

Because Yahweh (the original version of God from Genesis) was male so therefore all versions after him, upto today were male. It's only recently that the neuter-gender/female suggestion has come about.

This may not be the best analogy but here it is. It's said for the same reason most sailors call a ship her. It's been done that way for as long as any of them can remember.

I agree that it's a bit strange to think of a supreme deity having a gender, but I guess people do it because calling him "it" sounds even more awkward.

In the Bible God always referred to as the Father or Him, or He.

Because Jesus referred to him as a father, ever heard of a female father?and because Moses saw HIM and we can assume that Moses could tell male from female.
Also because the bible refers to his beard, unless he is a bearded lady he's a He. Does it really matter what gender He is? only to insecure people.
