The notion of Mary being an impure woman is an old and erroneous Catholic idea somehow connected to Christ having cast out seven evil spirits from her. They equated the seven evil spirits with their notion of seven deadly sins, one of which is immorality. This is false because there is no mention anywhere of her being immoral. Being possessed has nothing to do with any particular sin that she may have committed. It is enough to know that she was one of the Lord's favorite people and the one honored to be the first to see the risen Lord. She held a special place in His heart.

Saint Mary Magdalene was the first witness to the resurrection of Jesus. (See the 20th Chapter of the Gospel of John).
She was one of Jesus' followers during his ministry, and was present at the cross when he died.
There is some debate on whether she is the woman in Luke 7 who was a notorious sinner. Most biblical scholars believe that Mary Magdalene was not the notorious sinner.
The 8th chapter of the Gospel of Luke describes Mary Magdalene as being healed and supporting Jesus' ministry out of her means.
With love in Christ.

You're right....lots of people claim that the woman who anointed Jesus and wiped His feet with her tears was Mary Magdalene and some claim she was the one caught in adultry (where He told them the one without sin to cast the first stone). There is no name mentioned for the one caught in adultry and for the other it is in Luke it only says a sinful woman.
Mary Magdalene had 7 demons cast out of her. While she was possesed people probably wanted nothing to do with her. After the Lord cast them out she became one of the women who followed him and He honored her by appearing to her first after His resurrection.

The Catholic Church. They apologized for the mistake, but the damage has been done and people still think of Mary Magdalene as a whore.

They got this idea from Paul who was blatantly sexist and hated women. He would have cast aspersions on mary herself if he had thought he would have gotten away with it.I think he was gay!
