when it is cold my hands go blue, and when it's hot, they swell slightly and are reddish and warm.
could this be a problem with blood circulation?
any suggestions?

Sounds like Reynaud's. Have you shown your doctor? It could be nothing to worry about, or a symptom of something else, but it's best to check with a doctor, of course.

It does indeed sound like poor circulation; have you considered asking your doctor about taking a "baby" aspirin each day? Also, be sure you are drinking plenty of fuids, and getting plenty of exercise; also avoid drinks containing caffeine, as they tend to constrict the blood vessels.
