I've been using Second Chance vests for over 25 years. The Monarch series, level II, works best for under the shirt wear.

Keep in mind they are not "bullet proof"; rather they are bullet resistant. The kind of vest you are talking about will not stop a rifle bullet but will stop most hand gun rounds.

These are also soft vests, so if you do get shot expect a large bruise and the loss of a couple layers of skin. Not a bad trade considering the alternative is a bloody hole in your body.

Well, I am partial to the 2nd chance brand vest, but a Safariland vest saved me once when I was hit by a car when I was a motorcycle cop.
Pretty much all top brand body armor will do its job as advertised. It is tested by the NIJ which is the national institute of justice for its ability to stop bullets.
The thing about good old Kevlar is it also saves you in case of an accident. I was stopping at crosswalk for school children when the car behind me never slowed down and hit me.
If I hadn't had on a vest, my Doctor said I would've had kidney and spinal cord damage because I got ejected from my motorcycle and hit by the car. Then she slammed on the brakes and threw me down onto the asphalt.
Like I said, I was saved by a Safariland vest, really like the 2nd Chance Monarch series.

Get fitted for a custom vest at a police supply or larger gun store. They run a few hundred dollars I believe.

I just watched a show on Cable showing a vest called "Dragon Skin". It took 9mm, 5.56, 7.62, and a grenade....Only one problem. In many states it is illegal to purchase and wear a bulletproof vest unless you are law enforcement.
