My father suffered a stroke and is now paralized. My siblings and I decided to place him in a rehabilitation therapy home to live out his life. We visit him. But, all he argues about is his finances. He wants to keep his money, but he looses it or gives it away to people we dont know. He suffers from dimensia. It has been very difficult for me because I have been the one to handle all his life issues since his stroke. Is there anyone out there that has a similar situation? How can I handle my elderly father to get through his life? without me going crazy at the same time?

I know so well what you are going through, my Mom has Alzheimer's and is slowly deteriorating as far as her just dealing with everyday life. As for her finances, before she was diagnosed she had given me a Power of Attorney to handle her matters but that didn't help when it came to Social Security as they have their own rules and guidelines, so that would be one place to start and it shouldn't be hard because your father's doctor would be required to complete documentation as to your father's health, both physically and mentally. It hasn't been easy for me, but I still have my Mom and as long as we are both on this earth, I will take care of her. God Bless.

Does he recognize the bills 1s 5s 10s etc? If not you can give him "stage" money. It looks real enough to folks who suffer from dementia but others know instantly it's fake.

Is he is in a nursing facility or what? If so it concerns me that the administrator or the director of nursing hasn't made this suggestion. Who are the people that are accepting the money? If it is an employee of the facility they may be guilty of a criminal offense that depends on state where you live at least they can be terminated. If he is not in a nursing home get a recommendation from his Dr or the discharge planner where is being rehab'd. Most nursing homes have rehab units/personnel and are trained to deal with this type of situation.

There are support groups through churches, social services, home health agencies in addition to your current medical support resources.

Lastly again depending on the severity of his dementia if you have to have him declared incompetent he may not remember it anyway. I know that this is a very depressing situation but there are can be humorous moments so don't pass them up.

It will drive anyone crazy. But help as much.
Give limited amount to him. Handle all finances yourself.

You HAVE TO give him some money and consider it lost. Or tell authorities/ his nurse that they must oversee transactions.
Money to him means independence and security. He will feel helpless without some.
It is a Must for his well being.

Sigh. You'll probably have to apply to the court to have the poor guy declared incompetent, and that's pretty horrible. Go talk to his bank and they'll tell you how to proceed. In the US, you'll likely need a lawyer.
