God in the OT and Paul in the NT both agree that that is sinful. So why do modern Christians get body modifications and no one bats an eye? Everything from the most innocent of ear piercings to tattoos and beyond. Does that mean modern Christians are more lax and the Bible doesn't apply anymore or has God changed his mind on the subject since it was written?

I personally don't think they are wrong if they are done tastefully. Then again I'm not Christian.
In the Bible, God does say it is wrong, while many Christians are very lax on it and defy it point blank. Why is this? Who gives the individual the authority to pick and choose what is right vs wrong in their own religious texts when God clearly says "do not do this!"?

Tattoos were often used for cult religions, which is why they are forbidden. Some feel it still applies to all tattoos and some people don't feel that way. Piercings were common in the ear. It could signify loyalty to ones master and a life commitment to be their slave. You nailed it modern Christian are more Lax!
And no John the Baptist did not have tattoos, it would have violated His vow.

I wouldn't dwell on the issue as it bears too close a resemblance to legalism.
Some of the early Christians actually pierced an ear (men) to indicate that they were "bond slaves" of Christ.
Should you do it? Probably not. I have two tattoos, used to have a piercing (took it out) and all were got before I got saved. This flesh is fleeting, we will get new bodies in Heaven and to dwell on an issue like this may be a stumbling block to non-believers.
Anything that takes your eyes off Christ is of the enemy.
Think about this - if a person is not saved, then nothing else matters, including how many tattoos they have. Remember the real message: Jesus. God bless!

You are correct to say that it is wrong to modify the body.
God gave you the body that you have & that body is a temple. I believe that can be found in 1 Corinthians 6.
God hasn't changed; people have. As the scripture states. God is "...the same yesterday, today and forever."
We have also allowed social changes that are abominations to God; even though the majority of the US doesn't agree with some of these issues, we have allowed these changes to happen.
Yes, my friend, we are lax.....

I'm not aware that the bible adresses this.
My thoughts? I hate piercings on guys. Ear piercing on chicks is okay if it's just one piercing on each ear. Navel piercing is acceptable if the chick is hot. One or two small tattoos are okay if tastefully done. Female breast enhancement can be fabulous if properly done.

1 Cor 6:19-20
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
We are to glorify God in everything we do. Not harming our bodies or making them unsightly on purpose is part of that. Our body is meant to be respected as God's property, and not ours.

Christians pick and choose which parts of the Bible they will follow. If they don't like a rule they dump it. Doing this simply shoots their argument that you need religion to have morality in the foot..
