I've had this problem myself recently. I am younger (30') and very successful. People that generally try to do this with me (I call them the toppers, because they are always trying to "one" up me on everything I say.) I just don't deal with them anymore. As they try to call me, talk to me I just become very vague and not as communicative with them. I definitely don't condone the behavior. In fact, I have a pretty good temper, but I don't show it in public hardly ever. People think I am happy go-lucky and wouldn't be mean to anyone. I just have a great way of making the other person look like an a**!

Sometimes its just a matter of hitting a raw nerve with the other person. That person might be so stressed out they are just ready to blow: the example of 'road rage' is just perfect in this context. Face it: sometimes people just 'lose it': often, it's not even meant to be personal. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and did or said something particularly annoying and...that turned out to be the clincher: "POW", right in the kisser! Guess what? The world doesn't revolve around you: doesn't that realisation make you feel a WHOLE LOT BETTER? ?

In most cases where people are putting you down even when you are nice to them, its because they are unhappy with themselves.. so they put other people down to make themselves feel better about their own lives.. My advice is dont deal with them.. If you tell them not to talk to you that way and they still do, dont talk to them anymore. you dont need to be treated that way.

What is the reason for them to be this way?
Very very simple analogy..... because they are simply UNHAPPY....
Unhappy people like it when everyone else unhappy. There is kind of unexplainable bitterness in people when they see someone is happy or nice. Misery loves company.....

I knew a woman like that once. First time she did it I just gave a little nervous laugh because I didn't know what to say.
Second time she did it I went out of my way to be nice to her. She just ignored me (we worked together).
Third time I confronted her - I said something like "what do you mean, why are you saying that? Maybe I misunderstood but that sounded a little negative..."
Fourth time she did it I waited until she was alone, then I went up to her and said "WHAT THE F*CK IS YOUR DAMAGE B*TCH!?!!?. STOP F*CKING WITH ME!!! YOU START THAT SH*T ONE MORE F*CKING TIME OUT OF THE BLUE AND I SWEAR TO GOD WE'RE GONNA HAVE AN ISSUE, AND I SOLVE ISSUES! YOU GET IT? B*TCH? ONE MORE F*CKING TIME!!!!
There never was a fifth time.
True story.

You've got it - ask this question!
Someone was once rude to me and I tried to gloss over it, but then I took the bull by the horns and asked them why they felt it was okay to be rude to me.
I got an apology. And it never happened again. It only happens because you allow it.

Don't deal with them at all, don't pay any attention to them. Who cares why jerks do the things they do.

They don't know who you are and so they feel unsecure in that situation.
