It was intended to be a show of British resolve. And, like the others said, their mission was to arrest the rebel leaders and confiscate the munitions. They felt this would suck the wind out of the colonists' sails (so to speak). The theory being that it is easier to shout "We'll fight you" than to follow through while 500 redcoats are marching towards you with bayoneted rifles at the ready. They were convinced that if they forced the militias to actually face trained, professional soldiers, they would see the folly of their stance. The rest is history.
