My son recently turned 3. As far as going to the potty is concerned, he's mastered that art.
Therein lies my problem...
For the past few months, he has taken it upon himself to announce when he has to go to the potty, do his business, and get himself dressed back up. My wife or I usually accompanies him when he has to go #2 however, but for #1, he's more or less on his own.
Here recently on 2 occasions in the past week, he has taken off his pants and went to wizz on the floor. He made a puddle in the kitchen floor one day, his bedroom the next. We asked him why he did it. His reply was, "Because I wanted to."
We addressed the problem by showing him the mess he made, and explained to him that he needs to use the potty instead and made him sit in the corner for a few minutes.
He hasn't done it since and we hope he won't decide to do it again. But if he does, is this something that he is experimenting with, or is it something worse? Has anyone else had this problem??

Kids do the darnest things and we can't take them too seriously or we'l drive ourselves crazy. If I were you I wouldn't make to big of a deal out of it or he may think to do it just to get attention or to show defiance. When my son does something that leaves me scratching my head and wondering "what is he doing"???I talk to him about it,ask him why,(he usually doesn't know why)tell him not to do it again and why we don't do stuff like that and then I redirect him to doing something else that's fun and posetive. He usually forgets what he was doing and focuses on the project at hand.Don't be too hard on him,3 year olds haven't been here that long and aren't as smart as we grownups are.At least he isn't licking the electrical outlets or pouring water into the stereo.Just love him anyway, sometimes they just want to know if they mess up will you still love them.So show them that you will and all will be well.3 year olds are so much fun!!!

Seriously this is not a problem! I am a preschool teacher and I mainly work with 3-5 year olds. I also have a 5yr old and a baby, I can tell you that a majority of kids will go through a stage where they just get lazy. Is he distracted when he does this? Like is your son playing or with friends? Most kids have accidents because they don't want to miss out on whats going on or they are 'busy'
Don't stress too much, unless he begins having nightmares or his personality changes dramatically, There's nothing wrong with a 3 year old, having an accident or purposely doing this for attention.

Sounds like attention seeking behaviour. Ignore it in future as i think it's a normal thing. My son is now 4 & regressed with his potty training a couple of times in the last year for no reason other than he thought it was funny. We paid no attention to it but when we were walking down the isle at the supermarket i said to my partner "should we get some nappies for &*^% incase he starts wetting the floor again?" My son heard us & never did it again.

I hate to use the cliche, but, boys will be boys. My son used to do the same thing, he used one of his sister's diapers (to check absorbancy), various cups near the tub, and every tree in the yard. If, your son is using areas in the house, then, have him clean it up and tell him that it's inappropriate and that he should be using the toliet. He will get the hint really quick. In the meantime, keep temptations out of the way, like empty bottles, cups by the tub, pails in the yard, etc. You would be surprised at what little boys will try! Good luck!

My niece who is 3 1/2 has started doing this too. Her grandparents suggested putting the diapers back on and explaining to her why this is happening. I think at that age they have figured out a great new trick but don't quite understand why.

LOL This is one of those off the wall boy problems that are really common. Its an experimenting thing. Kind of like, look where I can pee! Lucky he's not doing it in his closet!!!! Or did you check the closet?

He is testing his limits....trying see what he can get away with. When he makes a mess than make him clean it up. It should be a phase but if he continues doing it than check with your pediatrician to make sure that there is not something medically wrong with him!
