I need to buy a small reliable car - I have £1000 roughly. Any suggestions on what would be the best buy at the moment? It has to be reliable

If I were you I'd go with a make with a reputation for general reliability - such as the Toyota Yaris or Nissan Micra. Not cute cars (certainly not as cute as your bottom), but easy to come by, cheap to run and reliable - although make sure you check the car out fully before buying.

If you can find a bit more cash, the VW Golf is a fantastic small car (I LOVE mine), but if you can find one for £1000 I'd be very suspicious.

For your budget, a Ford Ka might be best.

There are lots about (so they are not expensive to buy), fairly reliable, and easy to fix if something goes wrong. Spare parts are plentiful. As someone else mentioned, they are also good handlers, and stable at higher motorway speeds.

I would usually opt for a Japanese car, for reliability, but you won't get much for £1000.

Ford Ka - dead cheap insurance, drives like a go kart, faster and more stable on motorways than you would believe for a 1.3, and still cheap to insure. Oh and cheap parts and servicing as well.

As long as you only have one friend - or the other two are both one metre tall contortionists. Think of it as a cheap to run 2 seater.

VW Polo 1.1. German engineering, It never goes wrong.
Nissan Micra
Renault Clio
Peugeot 106

All good solid little cars. Avoid anything Korean (kia, hyundai etc) as they are cr*p and will fall to bits
