Actually, Islam divides the world into two main divisions:

1-Daru'l Islam : Islamic lands, which are governed by Muslims.
2-Daru'l Kufr: Lands of the infidels: which are governed by non-Muslims.

If one of the lands of the infidels is on war with Muslims, then it is called Dar'ul Harb (land of war). A good Muslim should not go to live in the land of war; otherwise he would be harrassed by the hostile non-Muslims living there.

If the land of the infidels is at peace with Muslims, then a good Muslim may go there for a necessity.

Usually, a Muslim is advised to stay in Islamic lands; where he will have all the benefits of being a Muslim there. You could go to the lands of the infidels with the aim for preaching Islam there, or if you found the lands of Islam very oppressive against you, while the lands of the infidels are not.

Nowadays, we can't discourage Muslims to go and live in America, Canada and Europe. People there are no longer bigotric; except for a small percentage of them. Again, more facillities and better treatment are provided in America and the West than in the lands of Islam. I myself am planning to live there and intermarry with them; especially that they always refer to absolute Justice and Equality in their governing systems; and that is very great.

According to the Quran, "There is no compulsion in religion" (2:256), thus, no one can be forced to become a Muslim. While it is true that in many places where Muslim armies went to liberate people or the land, they did carry the sword as that was the weapon used at that time. However, Islam did not spread by the sword because in many places where there are Muslims now, in the Far East like Indonesia, in China, and many parts of Africa, there are no records of any Muslim armies going there. To say that Islam was spread by the sword would be to say that Christianity was spread by guns, F-16's and atomic bombs, etc., which is not true. Christianity spread by the missionary works of Christians. Ten-percent of all Arabs are Christians. The "Sword of Islam" could not convert all the non-Muslim minorities in Muslim countries. In India, where Muslims ruled for 700 years, they are still a minority. In the U.S.A., Islam is the fastest growing religion and has 6 million followers without any sword around.

Shirkuh above answered the question exactly perfectly and he should get best answer.

However, the only reason I'm posting here is because all the non-muslims should understand that the word "kufr" is a VERY derogatory word and a slur against non-muslims.
