I have two suggestions:

1) This is an oldie, but the "Encyclopedia Brown" series were my and my brother's absolute favorites! They were short enough stories for my short attention span, but they were involved enough to make for good reading for up to the early teen years. (If I could get my hands on one... even at 37, I would read one... and I may go find one now!)

2) One of my brothers loved a different series, it was one where you could "choose your own outcome"... at the bottom of each page you had a choice to make.... and it would redirect you to a new page somewhere else in the book to continue reading. Eventually you would get to an ending. Then you could read the book again and try different outcomes. It seemed a lot of fun for my brother, but unfortunately I can't remember the name of the books. I will ask him, then edit my post here.

I hope this helps. Good luck.
