We have all heard about vista's hardware requirements. Sure a computer with a 1Ghz CPU, 1gb ram, 128mb video ram (for the areo effect) etc. will run the operating system but what will it really take to run the OS smoothly is what i want to know. I want to run games, make movies, convert my CD's in mp3's not just use it for web browsing and checking my emails...

First of all to run the OS smoothly doesn't require a lot as you could turn off Aero. However to keep aero on and run it smoothly, you would require at least 1 gig of ram and a recent processor. Also know that its not true that the more GHZ the faster the processor is. One example is Intel's core duo at 2 GHZ could easily blow a 3GHZ pentium 4 out of the water. As for video, the video RAM doesn't matter as much as the core of it. One card could have 512mb but if it has a bad core then Aero wouldn't run at all. I use a 6800GT and Vista runs fine. I would guess a 6600 equivalent or higher could run the OS fine.

Vista is another version of Advanced Server 2003 and we all know that means that system is a memory hog. With the specs you have stick to XP, that has been great for years and a GB is plenty for a Windows NT bases operating system.
