Infrequent menstruation is a symptom of (among other things) PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. This can be diagnosed by an OB/GYN using ultrasound techniques. If she has PCOS, she can still have children, it just may take longer to conceive.
After stopping birth control, it often takes the woman's body a bit of time to readjust to its natural cycles. This can also result in infrequent/light periods. However, this also does not preclude her ability to have children.
Your girlfriend should go to an OB/GYN and have a thorough exam. If you are truly concerned that she may be infertile, they may have tests they can do to see if she is producing healthy eggs. If she IS infertile, you can also talk to the OB/GYN about other family planning options (adoption, egg donor/surrogate, etc.)

Well, first of all, she needs to see a doctor to make sure of what's going on with her periods...it could be a sign of a problem even more srious than infertility. Or she could still be ovulating, just not very frequently. There are many options in fertility these days to offer hope to couples like yourselves. There are, of course, fertility meds to get her to produce eggs and ovulate. She could also have invitro fertilization, where a doctor takes some of your sperm and some of her eggs and mixes them up in a test tube, then implants it in her stomach. This procedure began about 20 years ago and is now very successful! She will need to talk to her doctor about these and maybe more options, but you are absolutely right, there is also adoption. The important thing is that you love each other and will appreciate any child you can have.

Relax. I used to have very erratic periods, and that's after over a decade of getting them. I didn't get my period for three months before I got pregnant with my son. He was born happy and healthy and actually that pregnancy helped normalize my periods and now I get them regularly.
There's more than one way to get the deal done and I doubt either of you are doctors. Use birth control for God's sake, and if and when the time comes where you would like to deliberately and intentionally create a child, give it the old college try and if it doesn't take, seek medical intervention. But I'm betting dollars to donuts she's perfectly fertile. I knew a guy who never used birth control because he never had before and had not gotten anyone pregnant, so he self diagnosed and decided he was sterile. He's now got three kids he never wanted. Don't make assumptions.

The length of the period doesn't mean anything about fertility. Once she stopped taking birth control, her fertility should be restored. The infrequency of her period may mean that she's underweight. Assume nothing until she sees a good doctor.
If she can't get pregnant because she doesn't produce eggs, there are fertility treatments to help her produce eggs, or she can get pregnant with a donor egg. There are lots of options.
Use birth control until you're married, just to be sure.

She needs to see a doctor. She could have PCOS which is why she has a period irregularly. I am in the same situation. If I want to get pregnant, I have to do IVF. It might be the same for your girlfriend. The other options are: adoption, fostering, IVF, or even surrogacy if her eggs are fertile. The best thing to do is get checked out!! Good luck
