Can anyone suggest single-varietal wines in the $20-30 range that are true to the archetypal nose and palate for that varietal? I'm interested in Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Chardonnay (wooded and unwooded).

It's for a blind tasting.

Well, let me start off by saying there are 2 major groups of so called varietal profiles there is New World (US, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Etc.) then there is Old World (France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and most of Europe really)

So with that being said here are recomendations:

New World

Merlot
Selby Merlot Sonoma $20-$25
Chateau Ste. Michelle Merlot Canoe Ridge Columbia Valley Washington $30

Syrah
Columbia Winery Syrah Red Willow Vineyard Yakima Valley $30
*Note Shiraz tends to be a more jamy style than typical syrah but it is the same grape

Chardonnay
Landmark “Overlook” Chardonnay California $28
Ridge Chardonnay Santa Cruz $34
Casa Lapostolle Chardonnay “Cuvee Alexandre” Casablanca Chile $24

Old World

Merlot
Chateau La Fleur St. Georges Lalande de Pomerol $21
*Any Bordeaux from Pomerol or St. Emillion will be mostly Merlot most of the time. The annoyance of french labeling here. This is also why on Sommelier tests Cab/Merlot is generally a joint category.

Cabernet
Any Bordeaux Not from Pomerol or St. Emilion will most likely be mostly Cab based. Also most super tuscans are dominated by cab, but they aren't inexepensive.

Syrah
Northern Rhones are all required to be Syrah for reds, so most of these will fit the bill nicely.

Chardonnay
Gerard Tremblay Chablis Vielle Vignes $17
J Moreau Chablis $22
Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay $30
* These will show much less oak than the Napa counterparts as well as less malolactic (buttery)

Well, that's the best I can do off the top of my head of wines I have had and know the profile. Hope you got what you needed.

Hess Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. We won a Holiday Party Blind taste test with this one. Always a hit, and only about $20.
